On the Friday of November 15th, SPB students enrolled in the Chinese language class went on a journey to Angel Island, which is located in the San Francisco Bay.
There, the students had the opportunity to visit the Immigration Museum, which provides rich historical context on the Chinese Exclusion Act and the
experiences of immigrants who passed through Angel Island. Angel Island, which is also known as the Ellis Island of the West, was one of the major immigration
stations in the 1900s. People of all races and ethnicities were held there upon their arrival; however, Chinese immigrants received the harshest and longest
detentions. During this trip, students were able to see the living conditions that immigrants had to endure, the carvings made during their detentions, and even
the local wildlife near the trail leading to the station. Through this trip our students gained a deeper appreciation of the struggles and contributions of Chinese
immigrants to U.S. society, which ties directly into our lessons on cultural identity, heritage, and the Chinese American experience.
