A Look Inside SPB with HS Principal Mr. McIntyre

Sept. 2024

Editor's Note: Mr. McIntyre has been the principal of high school department for more than a year now. His dedication to fostering a positive and inclusive school environment has truly made a difference. He is always approachable, listens to students and staff, and supports the school as a whole. In this interview, let's take a look into his thoughts about the school.

Q: What are your thoughts on our school? Is it what you expected? Were there any views that changed from last year until now?

A: "There isn’t anything out of the ordinary, and everything is pretty much as I expected. However, there is a lot of work due to the added grade levels, but it is both busy and exciting."

Q: Will our school ever get a nursing area for injured students?

A: "There is actually an injury/nursing room at the back of the office for injured students. There is even a bed, medical materials, as well as seclusion and privacy."

Q: Compared to other schools you've been with before is there anything that makes our school standout?

A: "Our school has an amazing facility. In addition, our school is a middle school and high school-based campus. Grades and changes are being added each year so that you get an experience of a new, in-the-process school which is different than others since other schools have all been built a good while back and is set in stone. Students won’t be able to watch the school develop like we can with our school."

Q: What inspired you to become an educator?

A: "Probably my family, my dad was a teacher for a little while, he taught English, which I taught later as well. My mom used to run a daycare center, and from watching them I think I picked up parts of their lives. I was also into athletics, and I always had this idea of teaching and coaching kids. I coached baseball for a long time, and it was a lot of fun. One day I decided I wanted to go into administration and ended up here!"

Q: What advice would you give to high school students who are unsure of what to pursue in the future?

A: "Don’t worry too much, it’s okay. It’ll come one way or another. There are plenty of people in life who grow up thinking they’re going to do one thing, but it changes. For example, I really thought I was just going to find a spot as a teacher, but things changed, and I had mentors who influenced me and helped me understand my path as an administrator. It’s totally okay to go different routes and sometimes things won’t turn out the same way; just keep trying!"

Q: In order for our high school to grow, we’ll need to retain as many of our students as possible. How do you plan on achieving this?

A: "All students have their own reasons for leaving and coming and students have left for in various grades and for different reasons, but to keep the students that we have (or have more students come), we will create programs and make changes that we need to base on our student’s needs; we are listening to all the complaints and are changing."

Thank you, Mr. McIntyre, for participating in this interview with us! Note: He invites us, our family, and friends to listen to future webinar coming with information on the current state of SPB, including our current programs, AP classes, extracurriculars, etc.
