There are many sports that the students of Stratford Preparatory excel at, beyond those of the school
sport variety. They range from basketball and soccer to football and disc golf, but today, we shall place the
spotlight upon a minority: archery. Archery is a sport of the mind, a test of mental strength. Unlike others,
very little about the sport actually involves physical strength or dexterity. The deal is keeping your calm,
and maintaining mental stability. There are three main groups, two of which we will discuss today;
Barebow, the simple, yet difficult traditional bow style. Recurve, the refined, more precise and competitive
art, and compound, the ultra-precise, incredibly accurate division. Barebow and recurve are represented
by two students: Albert Fu of S.V.A.D. and Theodore Liu of H.Y.P., respectively. These two have gone to
multiple competitions and tournaments, often placing very high in the rankings. Albert has won numerous
medals, but notes that barebow archers tend to face less competition than recurve archers. Archery is a
very welcoming sport, and joining is very easy. However, the challenge is improving. You often have to
uproot all you have learned in order to improve. You also need a reliable coach and range. Albert’s range,
Palomo Archery, is located in Palo Alto, while Theo’s, H.Y.P., is located at the Bowhunters range in the
mountains.
