Addison Nguyen - Nov. 2024

A couple of boats capsized in the Indian Ocean that were carrying migrants from Somalia. It is said that twenty-four people died. While it is unclear why the boats capsized, the rest of the on-board migrants survived. They were all rescued by inhabitants of the island of Nosy Be, which is an island a little north of Madagascar. The survivors' ages range from 17- 50. The boats left on November 2nd carrying seventy-three migrants, meaning that the boats had been on sea for around a month. It left by a beach near Somalia's capital. It is thought that they were going to Mayotte, which is around 1,600 kilometers away from Somalia or 990 miles (specifically, the French territory of Mayotte). Many people from Somalia actually embark on this journey every year to find better opportunities. This April, thirty-eight migrants already died because of a shipwreck. They were found to be heading toward Yemen, as their shipwreck was found off of Djibouti. Right now, Madagascar officials are trying to figure out why the boat capsized. The U.N. International Organization for Migration has requested help in investigating and solving this issue. Also, the government of Somalia is trying its best to organize a way for all of the citizens of its country to come back.
