Flying high in P.E. with Ultimate Frisbee

Krrish Gayash - Nov. 2024

In 6th grade P.E., we got introduced to the fascinating sport of ultimate frisbee. During ultimate frisbee we used two courts for a total of four teams. Two teams competed at once on one court. The Frisbee is passed from one person to another, until the in-court player passes the frisbee to an out-court player. The out-court player has to be outside of the other team's boundary, and cannot cross the side boundaries while attaining the disk. The opponent team can steal the frisbee by snatching, knocking, or grabbing it in midair flight. Once the opponent team attains the frisbee, they run to half-court and begin to score on the other team's side. Hand-offs, or in other words, passing the frisbee without giving the disk any airtime, is not allowed. A maximum of three seconds is given to the person who is in charge of the frisbee. The disk has to be passed with airtime within this time period.

We had a ton of fun playing the sport. Spinning the disk, blocking its flight by catching it midair, and scoring were all extremely exhilarating and boisterous. Though people were knocking each other down lightly, and some were excluding non-experienced players from the sport, the game was engaging. While I highly recommend this game, I believe people should be more respectful in this scenario.

As a fun fact, the World Flying Disk Federation (W.F.D.F), has been trying to add the sport of Ultimate Frisbee to the Olympics for many years now. So who knows? Very soon, perhaps, we will represent Stratford Preparatory for Ultimate Frisbee in the near future.
