Heavy Rainfall Floods the
Sahara Desert

Elizabeth Yeh - Oct. 2024

The Sahara, known as one of the driest places on the Earth, experienced flooding by heavy rainfall for the first time in decades. After two days of intense rain, some areas saw up to 8 inches of rain, resulting in the formation of new lakes. Satellite images from NASA revealed the revival of lakes that have been dried up for decades, such as one in the Iriqui National Park. Meteorologists describe the rainfall as an extratropical storm which will continue to affect the climate in the Sahara for months to come. As the air now holds more moisture, severe downpour can be expected in the future. Experts say the extreme weather is linked to climate change, and as fossil fuel pollution gets worse, this may become more common.
