Hezbollah and Israel: The Verge of a Middle Eastern War

Ronav Ahuja - Oct. 2024

On October 1, 2024, a major moment in history happened. Iran launched around 200 missiles at Israel in response to the killing of Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah days earlier. This act, alongside a ground invasion by Israeli forces into southern Lebanon, was considered by Iran to be a “violation of Iran’s sovereignty and martyrdom,” which served as justification for Iran’s attack.

A year ago, the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas engaged in conflict with Israel in the infamous Oct. 7 attack. Shortly after, the Lebanese terrorist group, Hezbollah, initiated aggression towards Israel, launching rocket strikes across its shared border. Hezbollah, a Shia Islamic group that holds political sway within the Lebanese government in addition to being an Iran-backed militant group, was formed after Israel invaded Lebanon amidst the Lebanese Civil War of 1975. The Israeli invasion itself was launched in response to an attack carried out by certain elements within Lebanon.

For the first time in history, the USA defended Israel by using their vessels to help intercept some of the Iranian missiles. This action is significant as for years the USA has only supplied Israel with weapons and money.
