healthy habits for finals

Anna Tom - Oct. 2024

With trimester finals rolling around, most students are probably very worried about tests that could make or break their grades. Unfortunately, this may cause them to have unhealthy habits, such as studying very late into the night or worrying excessively about their tests. Too much stress and poor study habits will only lead to poor mental health; they won’t boost any grades. Fortunately, there are several ways to prepare yourself before taking a test.

  1. A good night’s sleep. Rather than pulling an all-nighter, it’s more beneficial to study in the afternoon or in the early evening. It’s also important not to study before bed, which will only stress you out and make it harder to sleep. The importance of sleep is that it not only allows you to concentrate better the next day, but studying too much will only make you more stressed.
  2. Breathing exercises. This is a simple trick to calm yourself during the test. If you’re very worried, you might suddenly feel your heart beating very heavily. If this happens, just breathe in slowly and breathe out slowly in deep breaths, which should bring your heart rate back down and calm your mind.
  3. Don’t cram. If you have a big test coming up, like the finals, don’t wait until the last minute to study everything. Spread out your studying throughout the week, so you can study a little bit everyday, which also lets you allow time for breaks. This way, you don’t have to spend the entire night before trying to cram every bit of information in.
  4. Form a study habit that works best for you. Different people have different study methods. Some people might like to study in groups while others might prefer to study alone. Some people might use online study game platforms while other people might prefer flashcards or reading notes. Whatever way works best for you to remember information should be the method you use.
  5. Limit distractions. While it’s good to take breaks when studying, you should keep distractions away WHILE you’re studying. If you get distracted by devices, put them in a place where you won’t be tempted. If you get distracted by other people, study alone in a place with minimal noise.

Shadowing

Anna Tom - Oct. 2024

For the past few weeks, many students from many different Stratford campuses have come to shadow our high school. Student ambassadors have been taking them around our school to give them insight into how our school is run, as well as what the curriculum and lessons look like. While our school is small, visiting students were quite happy with how this allowed them to have more one-on-one time with teachers to improve on various skills. Additionally, they found the shadow hosts very friendly, making them feel welcome in the Stratford high school community. We hope to welcome more students to our shadow program so that they can learn about the exciting opportunities our school has to offer!

Get Ready For the Next MusicalWith Drama Teacher Ms.Cullen

Anna Tom - Oct. 2024

Why do you like being a Performing Arts and Drama Club teacher?

I like it because I have been an actor for my entire life. I just really love theater, and I like giving students that opportunity as well.

If you were a kid in a Drama Club, what role in HSM 2 (High School Musical 2) would you want the most?

I would love to do Sharpay because she has the most amount of fun songs.

What’s the biggest challenge of being a Performing Arts and Drama Club teacher?

I think one of the hardest parts is having to cast the show for Drama Club. Moreover, for performing arts, the hardest part would be controlling the chaotic environment because some kids think it’s recess.

Do you feel that you’re better at singing, acting, or dancing?

I think I'm the best at acting or dancing, but I don’t think that I'm the best at singing, so that’s why we have Ms. Brenna. I have danced since I was 3 years old and danced all through middle school. I have acted since I was 7 years old and have taken many acting classes during college.

What got you interested in becoming a Performing Arts and Drama Club teacher?

I knew that it would be really hard becoming an actor in the Bay Area, but I still wanted to do a job that’s theater related. Therefore, I decided to be a performing arts and drama club teacher. Also, I loved working with kids better than adults.
