Myanmar Landslide and Flooding

Menaja Sathyaprakash & Harika Appalla - Sept. 2024

The death toll in Myanmar reaches 74 due to flooding and landslides caused by the recent Typhoon Yagi. With 89 people currently missing and 74 people reported dead by local officials, the state is worried that due to connections and power lines being cut, more people could have died or gone missing without anyone’s knowlegde. Earlier Typhoon Yagi hit Vietnam, northern Thailand and Laos, killing more than 260 people and causing major damage.

Editor's Note: Considered Asia's most powerful storm this year and the strongest to ever hit Vietnam, this typhoon has only created destruction in its wake as it coursed through southern China and Southeast Asia. Not only has it killed countless as aforementioned, but it has also triggered widespread damage to infrastructure and factories. Even after Typhoon Yagi touched down on Vietnam and dissipated, the storm's aftermath continues to wreak damage and death, with resulting floods and landslides causing about 200 deaths (not to mention the 125 people listed as missing).

Unfortunately, storms like these are only becoming more common as the ocean continue to warm due to climate change -- as warned by scientists. While developed nations are responsibly for the majority of the greenhouse gases resulting in climate change, developing nations and small-island states ultimately face the greater threat. A typhoon like Yagi disrupts an entire region's economy, community, infrastructure, and so much more, utterly altering their daily lives. It's up to the government and, more importantly, the people to take a stance against climate change and actively help people suffering the brunt of natural disasters.
