Runaway Penguin Found After Two Weeks Lost at Sea

Elizabeth Yeh - Sept. 2024

Pen, a penguin raised in captivity, was found safe in Japan after two weeks of being lost at sea. Her keeper, Ryosuke Imai, expressed great concern for the penguin, as Pen had never swam in the ocean before. While taking a dip in the ocean, Pen escaped through a hole in her enclosure. Following her escape from the zoo, she swam 45 kilometers during a typhoon. African penguins are able to swim 40 kilometers a day, but their muscle mass decreases after being in captivity for a long time. Her chances of surviving were slim. Due to a fortunate turn of events, the hurricane ‘Shanshan’ saved Pen with constant rainfall. The constant rainfall kept Pen cool and hydrated. She was found on the shore of a nearby beach, just 8 miles away from her facility. When she was found, she was in good condition and uninjured. “It's nothing short of a miracle,” Imai stated.
