For the beginning of this season, Coach Purnell has organized SPB’s Cross Country team with a
rigorous, yet rewarding program to help developing runners succeed in the multiple meets planned.
The team is humble but strong, and its small size allows for easy travel in the Stratford van. Now that
our team has access to an easy form of travel, runners can experience real terrain in order to practice
and prepare. Every practice is a unique challenge now with days for cross-training in the weight room,
running in alternate locations such as Vasona Lake County Park, and timed out-and-backs that build
team spirit. The team was only warming up with the first meet of the year on September 13, with many
more planned for later this season.
Members of the Cross Country team were in good spirits after completing their first meet; overall, the
reception was great. Out of the whole team, there were three freshman girls, one freshman boy, and
one sophomore girl competing in separate races. Also, we are happy to announce that the team has
recruited new members since then and is still looking for more. If you are interested in participating in
this season’s competitive, team-building races, cross country is for you!
