The Laver Cup tournament, an annual ATP 1000 men's team tennis tournament, where Europe faces the rest of the world, held in different major cities each year, was held in San Francisco this year in late September 2025. This marks a significant period in the San Francisco Bay Area, as this is the first time such a major, famous tennis tournament has been held in Bay Area's history.
To initiate, the Cup tournament was held in the Chase Center of San Francisco, the stadium home to the Golden State Warriors basketball team, which includes Stephen Curry. Since July, the stadium, being a convertible one, was temporarily redesigned for a tennis stadium, with everything the same except the flooring, seating barriers, and the net. Now, the two teams: featuring Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Jakub Mensik, and Flavio Cobolli, and Team World, consisting of Taylor Fritz, Alex de Minaur, Francisco Cerúndolo, João Fonseca, Alex Michelsen, and Reilly Opelka. While famous players like Alexander Bublik, Djokovic, and Jannik Sinner unfortunately did not participate.
However, the coach for team world, Andre Agassi who was one of the best tennis players of all time is a legendary coach that has coached Djokovic, won the cup thanks to his coaching skills. To make it better, Andre Agassi's father was an Armenian man who was an Iranian citizen, showing that although Agassi was born in America, Iranians would watch him play matches on TV. They celebrated his achievements as he became an inspiration to Iranian tennis players. Iranians think of him as one of the last heart beats of Iranian representation for tennis.
